Chapter Eleven

What a butt! Okay, so kill her. Ms. Francesca had to take a peek when got out of the water. But payback remained as the image burned in her brain.

An amazing back—but she’d already known that—narrowing down to one magnificent butt. A butt that spoke about running and many hours in the gym that had paid off in spades.

Wowza!

Frankie wasn’t sure, but they seemed to have had a moment beneath that waterfall. Maybe it was her imagination, but some of those walls he guarded so completely seemed to crack around him. The juvenile part of her thought about what he said about having a committed relationship with her, if he were the type. It was kind of sweet and weird and touching all at the same time. Not the best at judging the barometer of men—who was she kidding, she didn’t have a clue about what men thought—still, he seemed sincere.

But when they got back, he retreated upstairs to his lair, while she had to confront prep work for the day. Supplies were running low, and she hadn’t had a delivery in over a week. On top of that, the supplier had left a message indicating there was a problem, and she needed to call. But when she did, she had to leave a voicemail message.

She had a pot of gravy simmering on the stove, sausage and peppers cooking in the oven, the last of her vegetables chopped and ready to go as worry burrowed through her mind. For a while, she’d chalked the delivery problems up to the storm, but the possibility that it was much more than that came full center.

In all the years Crossroads Café had operated, there’d never been a problem with delivery. She glanced over her books and realized she’d gotten behind in payments.

Crap.

When Rafe came down the back stairs and spotted Frankie poring over her books, he didn’t bother to interrupt. Instead, he trailed her hair with his lips. Finishing off this sexual thing between them meant he’d be able to stop thinking with his dick and get the job done. “Tommy and Sarah just walked in. I’ll get them some water.”

After he served the water, he headed back toward the kitchen. Something was bothering Frankie. It didn’t take a genius to figure out it had something to do with her money problems.

He slipped an arm around her waist. “What’s going on?”

She turned to look at him. “There’s a problem with the food delivery.”

“What kind of problem?” His temper flared at the back of his skull like somebody was piercing him with a red-hot poker. He had little doubt that Probst was behind this recent wrinkle in her life. They were playing dirty. Not cool.

She sniffed, causing multiple anger flares to surge within him. “I’m not sure yet, except I might not have enough food to carry me through the weekend.”

“We’ll go to wherever it is you get your stuff and buy it and bring it back ourselves.”

“Except you have a broken motorcycle and I have a VW Beetle for transportation.
